After a short flight from Beijing to Xilinhot, we will take a bus ride through the beautiful scenery of Inner Mongolia's grasslands
to arrive at the Mongolian "Nomad Family" site.  There you will experience the traditional Mongol culture.

Day 1:  Travel from Beijing to Xilinhot

Bus option:  Leave Beijing at 10 a.m., accompanied by a grasslands culture expert.  Enjoy the varied scenery of Beijing, Hebei, and Inner Mongolia while stopping at several special sites to learn about the unique history and culture of the grasslands along with its modern changes.  Arrive in Xilinhot around 7 pm.

Airplane Option:  Fly from Beijing International Airport at 9 pm, arrive in Xilinhot around 10 pm.

Day 2:  Travel by bus from Xilinhot to the Nomad Family site, which is marked by Wolf Totems, stopping at two places.  The first site, Bailingbaolige, was a natural spring but has recently run dry.  Talk to local herders about the ecological changes.  The second site is an “aobao”, a sacred site for Mongolian herders that includes petrified wood.  Sleep in a traditional yurt actually used by nomads.

Day 3:  Around Nomad Family site.   Get up early with the herders in order to watch them milk the cows (or do it yourself!) and then join them in making fresh yogurt.   Afterwards, ride horses (car is available) to Arxiaot, a large lake that has gone completely dry within the last four years.  Join the herders as they plant grass and shrubs to fight expanding desertification.

Day 4:  Daytrip to Narlingol, another Mongol herder site.  Travel around grasslands untouched by modern society, examining the streams, cattle and sheep herds, and desertified areas, including the site of the Jin Dynasty (1148 A.D.) Great Wall.

Day 5:  Travel from Nomad Family to Wulagai Wetland.  From Wulagai Wetland travel to a traditional Tibetan temple.  Return to Xilinhot.

Day 6:  Sightseeing around Xilinhot, including the impressive Beize Tibetan Temple.  Depart Xilinhot airport for Beijing at 10 p.m.

All meals provided – eat the freshest lamb and beef of your life!  Discuss ecology and life with herders.  Chinese – Mongolian – English translation provided.
